School Daze

Cathey Middle SchoolThere are several new readers of Blogging Iraq. Most of them come from the Cathey Middle School choirs in McAllen, Texas.

My mother, the choir director there, has decided to post many of my blog entries on her bulletin board. So, when I post a new entry, the students at the school can read what new things I’m doing here in Iraq. That said, this blog is rated PG. So, please keep your comments respectful and clean!

Today was an educational experience itself!

I coordinated a media roundtable with the Pan-Arab media and my commanding general. I don’t speak very much Arabic (as I’ve discussed before), but I have a linguist in my office who is able to translate for us.

I think it went really well, and I’m hoping to get these media outlets in Iraq to come visit more of our facilities. It’s important that the people of Iraq have a chance to see that we are doing some really great things here. We managed to get ourselves a (well-deserved) bad reputation, and it’s going to take lots of work to show people we are really here to help.

  1. Thanks, Son, for the shout-out!

The Cathey Choir is 237 strong this year and we are all enjoying your blog, learning the unexpected side of another culture!

On July 27, 2009, Cathey MS became an Authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School.

For our students: today’s blog is a good example of the Learner Profile, Open-Minded. The open-minded learner understands and appreciates their own culture and personal history, and is open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities. The open-minded learner is accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and are wiling to grow from the experience.

Again, thank you for serving our country and protecting us. I am so proud of you!

  2. I am one of the young inquiring minds that your mom teaches at Cathey Middle School. We have been singing for you, praying and following your duty on the blog. 3. Congratulations to the Cathey MS on their achievement. I know your teacher and she is EXCELLENT!!! Little known fact: She used to take lessons from a German Diva while she was in Germany (where else?). She learned a lot and always has performed well. Brad, keep on keeping on. Each day is new and exciting (sometimes too exciting). Thank you and the personnel with you for your service. Renee, Keep up the good work and keep the students on their toes!!!
